- The productivity equation
The three myths
"I don't have time"
- We actively choose how we spend our time
- your time is in your control. You make decisions based off of priorities
- you actively chose to not make the time to do something
- you can choose to do something else
- you should take this phrase out of your vocabulary and instead use "I'm actively choosing not to make the time"
- You train yourself not to use time as an excuse to not do something you want to do
Myth of Motivation
- You start with a thought and end with an action when completing task
- Thought ("I should study") →Motivation ("I feel like studying right now") → Action (study)
- Motivation acts as a middle man in this process
- We think that we need to feel like doing a task in order to complete it. This shouldn't be the case. choosing self discipline over motivation is an effective way to increase productivity. you know something needs to be done, so you do it. you don't wait to feel like it.
- We have to get started on our task at some point even if we don't feel like it
- Though ("I should study") → Action (you studied)
- discipline = going directly from though to action
- we only really need motivation for task that are short term painful but have long term benefits
- increasing motivation
Myth of Multitasking
task switching
- When we switch from one task to another we still have some attention focused on the task completed
- We should try to reach the Flow state
